Cypress Our History

Cypress Energy Partners, LLC was formed in 2012 by Regent Private Capital, LLC the family office of energy pioneer and leader Charles C. Stephenson in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Charles Stephenson has worked in the energy industry for over 50 years and is a petroleum engineer. He has lived and worked in most major basins in the US as well as parts of Europe and Latin America. After successful careers at Amerada Hess, Samson, and Andover he started Vintage Petroleum in the early 1980’s, took it public on the NYSE, and dramatically grew the company for almost twenty five years. He created significant shareholder value for his investors and wonderful long term employment opportunities for thousands of professionals. Several years ago he sold Vintage Petroleum where he was Chairman, & CEO to Occidental Petroleum. He then started Premier Natural Resources and is currently Chairman & CEO. They formed a strategic relationship with KKR & Co. L.P. (formerly Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co.) as a strategic limited partner and have been active in buying producing oil and gas properties. Regent decided to form Cypress Energy Partners to focus on providing water resource management solutions to the oil and gas industry. The tremendous growth in the U.S. energy industry driven by “unconventional” oil and gas exploration has created a very large and growing demand for water solutions. Material advances in drilling and completion technologies have unlocked large reserves of hydrocarbons in multiple “unconventional” resource plays in North America. These new drilling methods often involve a sophisticated procedure called hydraulic fracturing, which requires the injection of large amounts of water, proppants, and chemicals under high pressure into rock formations to stimulate production of oil and gas. This hydraulic fracturing process requires an average of 0.5-10 million gallons of water for each new well.

As part of the process, some portion of this unproduced water returns to the surface as a by-product or waste stream that is generally either recycled, legally disposed of in an EPA Class II saltwater disposal well or placed in evaporation pits where the water is evaporated at the surface. Each new oil and natural gas well completed generates produced water which is water from underground geological formation that is lifted to the surface along with the oil or gas during the normal course of oil or gas production operations. Since this water has been in contact with hydrocarbon-bearing formations, it contains some of the chemical characteristics of the formations and the hydrocarbons and also is generally either recycled, disposed of in an EPA Class II saltwater disposal well or placed in evaporation pits.

We passionately believe water stewardship and management in the oil and natural gas industry is a significant growth opportunity. We have extensive industry relationships and expertise and look to provide cost effective solutions to support the energy industry.
